Okehampton Running Club (ORC)
Please see below a message from Graham Smith who has set up a virtual 5k race which takes place every Saturday morning - Please take a look it would be great to see some of you have a go !! Last year during the first lockdown I set up a free weekly Saturday morning virtual 5k from my home in St Albans, called Fly 5k. I'm now contacting clubs from further afield, and wondered if some of your club members might be interested. We have several clubs in Cornwall involved and I'm now speaking to clubs in Devon. Each week we have members of around 40 clubs and an average of 200 runners of all abilities taking part, from around 1,300 runners who've joined us. The current men's record is 14:48 and women's record is 17:45.We've had great feedback about how motivating it is for people right now, so hopefully we can spread that wider to members of clubs like yours. It's intended to be more race focused than (non)parkrun, being at a specific time (8-12 on Saturday morning), and we also have an inter club competition every three weeks. Club runners can submit times from other events or 5k sections from longer runs too, so you can submit times from your own club league events, or piggy back off it as a club event if you like. Our Facebook group is the big bonus.. as it means we can actually share our race efforts etc and get to know a wider group of people beyond our own clubs whilst normal racing can't take place. If this sounds of interest and you think some of your club members might like to take part they can join us at facebook.com/groups/fly5k. There's no need to register to race and anyone can take part. Those not on Facebook can still take part by submitting their time and viewing the results and weekly race report on our website www.runfly5k.com (best viewed on a desktop / laptop). ... Saw some ORC members yesterday along Granite Way. Completed a half marathon in what wasn’t too bad a time for me and my stumpy legs! Great to see people out enjoying their running on what was a glorious day. ... See MoreSee Less

**ORC and ORCJ Lockdown 3.0 Challenge two**The next challenge will be over the weekend of 30th and 31st Jan. The weather does look slightly warmer and drier so hopefully we will get a great attendance.I was looking over the map for routes that I have either not followed or not run for a while to try and break up the habitual routes that I normally run. I suddenly realised everyone often runs the same few routes. Since we are all running from home or within a short drive then we will pick a route and repeat it over and over. I then realised this is our next challenge…**The weekends challenge will be ORC and ORCJ “Hamlets and Villages”.**The challenge is to find a route not chosen often by yourself, along footpaths and quiet country lanes to visit as many Hamlets and Villages as you can.All groups can do this. Go down the end of that lane you always pass, follow that footpath to see where it goes.A photo of the village sign is simple, Hamlets don’t always have signs so a photo of a building or sign that mentions the Hamlets. Those of you who live outside of Okehampton will have a considerable advantage so let’s get loads of you all involved.Remember the lockdown guidelines by exercising once a day, within your bubble and with one other person outside your bubble. Social distance at all times and don’t drive too far from home to start.I look forward to you photos coming up.Enjoy the challenge #ORClockdownchallenge ... See MoreSee Less
