Hameldown Hammer and Exeter City 10k

There was some good running from ORC in two very contrasting races on Sunday At the Hameldown Hammer, set in the heart of Dartmoor and starting in Widecombe in the Moor, six ORCs took on a tough, challenging trail race on what turned out to be a very windy day. F our of them ran the full Hammer, a half marathon race with over 600m of ascent, while the other two tried out the new, slightly shorter route, the Hameldown 7EVEN, “The Long 10k” which still has in excess of 300m of ascent and still includes a double ascent of the Hameldown ridge. Christine Fritsch was the first ORC home in the Hammer in 2.46.45, with Ang Martin not far behind in 2.47.18, while Jo-Anne Turner and Alison Holiday ran together finishing in 3.06.48. Katy Speak ran the 7EVEN finishing in 1.38.27 to come third in her age category, with Carole Cornwall just a minute behind in 1.39.33.

For four ORCs it was all about speed over a fast and flat course at the Exeter City 10k. The route for this was a 2 lap run, starting with a lap around Duckes Meadow sports field, then heading out towards the quay through the Riverside Valley Park before returning to the sports field for another lap. First to finish was Rob Kelly, with yet another great run in 37.04 coming 5th overall, followed by Chris Turner in eight place in 39.23. The first lady ORC was Lora Medland who, having only just set a new half marathon PB at this venue two weeks ago, repeated her success over 10k, finishing in 52.11. Charlotte Williams rounded off the club’s entries in 1.08.29. Advertised as a fast and potential PB course, this race turned out to be exactly that for Rob, Chris and Lora, all pleased to score new personal bests.

Run in the Park is this Sunday 5th March so if you’re not at Bideford please do come along to run or help out! As always it starts at The Hub in Simmons Park and you can do 1 lap of 2.5k or 2 laps for the 5k. Adults £1 and children are free! Come along from 9:00 to start at 9:30am.

Many thanks to Jane for the run report.
